A message’s meaning is conveyed in three ways: words, voice quality, and body movement.

Acclaimed communication researcher, Anton Barbour, author of Louder than Words: Non-Verbal Communication, found that a message’s meaning is conveyed in three ways: words, voice quality, and body movement. What is interesting is how much of a message’s meaning is conveyed through each mode. Words convey 7% of a message’s meaning, voice quality conveys 38% of the meaning, and body movement conveys 55% of a message’s meaning; making how you say something more important than what you say.
