Family Communication During Deployment

Section Four: Summary

During deployment both Service Members and their families may feel the stress of not being able to communicate as often as they want to.

For many military families it can be difficult to know what or how much to communicate, because families want to stay connected, but are not always able to know everything about each other’s experiences. Creating a family communications plan and evaluating the causes of miscommunication can help families choose the best communication methods for the information they need to communicate in the time frame that works best. Now that you’ve completed this lesson, you should be able to:

  • Identify types of information that can and cannot be shared during deployment,
  • Recall strategies to leverage the family communications plan,
  • Apply constructive communication strategies, and
  • Apply strategies to manage communication challenges.
