Congratulations! You have completed the "Developing a Relationship with Your Mentee" module developed by TCAM. Now that you’ve completed this module, you should have a better understanding of the stages of the mentoring relationship, the perspectives of mentees and mentors at each stage, strategies for addressing challenges that arise, and the role of mentoring program staff in supporting you and your mentee.


Remember that when mentoring a young person, you will have to work to build trust—and this takes time. Your ability to adjust your expectations and demonstrate patience with your mentee is critical. Your mentoring program’s staff can offer you essential support, helping you understand the meaning behind your mentee’s actions and giving you effective strategies for relating to her. You should turn to your program’s match support whenever you encounter a problem in the relationship that you’re not sure how to solve.

  • Mentoring for Meaningful Results by Kristie Probst provides asset-building tips, tools, and activities for youth, adults, and caregivers entering and involved in a mentoring relationship. The book was created with input from MENTOR/National Mentoring Partnership and Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Greater Twin Cities.
  • The Good Teen: Rescuing Adolescence from the Myths of the Storm and Stress Years by Richard M. Lerner, Ph.D., is based on an eight-year study of 4,000 teens from 25 states.   • “Common Stages and Sources of Support for the Mentoring Relationship" is a downloadable handout from TCAM with strategies to help mentors navigate each stage of the mentoring relationship and understand where to go for support.

The Center for the Advancement of Mentoring Partners

TCAM is a project of Education Development Center, Inc. (EDC), in collaboration with Dare Mighty Things, Inc. (DMT); Dr. Roger Jarjoura of Indiana University and founder of Aftercare for the Incarcerated Through Mentoring; and Dennis Talbert, President of Empower Outreach, a faith-based mentoring program for high-risk youth. TCAM Online Training Series for Mentors and Mentoring Program Staff Terms and Conditions for Use

Overview

The TCAM Online Training Series for Mentors and Mentoring Program Staff was developed by TCAM—The Center for the Advancement of Mentoring. It is designed to be used free of charge by youth mentoring programs funded by the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention (OJJDP) of the U.S. Department of Justice and by other mentoring providers and individuals.

 

The TCAM Online Training Series for Mentors and Mentoring Program Staff includes six online training modules for mentors, which are intended to be used in combination with in-person mentor training provided by mentoring programs, as well as two online modules for mentoring program staff about designing and delivering in-person mentor training. The content of the training series is informed by mentoring research and best practice, the expertise of the TCAM Leadership Team, and TCAM’s experience providing technical assistance to OJJDP mentoring grantees. Each module is designed to be completed in approximately 30 minutes, and individuals may opt to complete one or more of the eight modules.

Some of the materials in this training series are posted in PDF format. PDF, which stands for Portable Document Format, is a popular format for distributing documents on the Internet. Enabling Javascript
