Training Style Assessment

Rate the following statements on a scale from 1-5.

1-Not like me, 2- Somewhat not like me, 3- Neutral, 4- Somewhat like me, 5- Most like me


  1. I like to verbally encourage participants to learn the most they can.
  2. I provide a clear pathway so participants can learn the material on their own.
  3. I make sure there is active participation between participants.
  4. I enjoy being in front of the group.
  5. I am enthusiastic in a training setting because I think that my enthusiasm rubs off on participants.
  6. I believe that it’s enough to give people the information and materials with instructions so they can assume responsibility for their own learning.
  7. In a training session, I believe it is more important to use small group and person to person interaction than lecture or individual exercises.
  8. When I am “on,” I can influence the interest of participants significantly.
  9. I believe every small success in learning should be positively reinforced.
  10. I make sure each participant has time to think through the content.
  11. I believe flexibility is critical to success when determining the order of activities in a training session.
  12. It makes my day when participants give me positive feedback about my training.
  13. I think participants see me as one of them.
  14. I believe participants can get the most out of a training session by establishing and managing parameters for behavior and interaction.
  15. All participants need many opportunities to add ideas during group discussions.
  16. I believe that a good trainer needs to be able to explain content in a structured, logical way.

  1. Add the numbers for statements 1, 5, 9, and 13. This total is your preference for the coaching style.
  2. Add the numbers for statements 2, 6, 10, and 14. This total is your preference for the guiding style.
  3. Add the numbers for statements 3, 7, 11, and 15. This total is your preference for the facilitating style.
