Foster learning by increasing participation.

If you have time, use strategies to increase participation:

  • At the end of the lesson, if there is still time, refer back to parking lot topics
  • Ask open-ended questions that stimulate discussion
  • Use polling to test assumptions or stimulate debate

If you are short on time, use strategies to manage over participation:

  • Summarize participant comments and move on
  • Ask closed-ended questions to allow participants to still participate, but limit response time
  • Use phrases like, “In the interest of time, let’s move on to the next topic,” or “That is a great point and something that we will look at in the next section of the lesson.”
