Welcome to the National Guard Family Program e-learning lesson on battle breathing to reduce stress. Battle breathing has been recognized in the psychological, medical, and military communities as a means to reduce vulnerability to stress. Battle breathing can be used to focus one's attention on the present moment and to respond skillfully to situations that can cause stress or anxiety. In reviewing this lesson, you'll gain a deeper understanding of battle breathing and even have the opportunity to engage in a battle breathing practice exercise. At the end of this training you will be able to define and describe the practice of battle breathing and identify scenarios in which to effectively apply battle breathing techniques.

Battle breathing requires time and patience.

The practice of battle breathing and mindfulness requires you to intentionally focus on yourself— a difficult task for people who are accustomed to high-stress work environments, multitasking, and wearing many hats throughout the day. In reviewing this lesson you will have the opportunity to practice battle breathing and learn about its practical applications.

After completion of this online training, you will be able to:

  • Define and describe the practice of battle breathing;
  • Identify scenarios in which battle breathing techniques could be effectively applied.
